Dresden Anniversary Events 2023

On the 78th anniversary of the bombing of Dresden, the Trust enjoyed representation in events in both Germany and the UK. A diverse and varied commemorative program was created in Dresden for 2023.

On 13th Feburary, Daniel Schieferdecker, represented the Trust as a guest of Dresden Mayor Dirk Hilbert at a reception lunch at the Coselpalais. Both later attended the opening of "Fragile Remembrance - The Dresden Cassette" (Fragiles Erinnern Die Dresden-Kassette).

This is an installation artefact of the Gerhard Hartmann Collection, held at the Leipzig National Library and was shown for the first time. It features a bomb splinter in a specially designed metal cassette together with poems by Durs Grünbein and woodcuts by Ralf Kerbach.

The final part of the day's commemorations for Daniel was the Gedenkweg where he read some commemorative texts. You can watch and listen to the readings in the video below.

Meanwhile, back in the UK, Trust chairman Marcus Ferrar and Trust Patron HRH The Duke of Kent, were lunch guests at the German Embassy in London by kind invitation of German Ambassador Miguel Berger. They were joined by Minister-President of Saxony Michael Kretschmer.

Ambassador Berger praised the Dresden Trust’s important work to heal the wounds of history and strengthen the relationship between Germany and the UK.
