Dresden Scholars’ Scheme (Germany): for German pupils

The Dresden Scholars’ Scheme (Germany)

The Dresden Scholars’ Scheme (Germany) was founded by David Woodhead in 2000/01 and is now run by Trustee Paul Stocker, his contact details are given below. It is open to pupils from Saxony; UK pupils should read the details of the Dresden Scholarships (UK) here. The following outline was written by David in 2016.

The Scholars’ Scheme was inspired by the Dresden Trust’s work for Anglo-German reconciliation, a clear statement of the vital need to encourage friendship among a younger generation free of blame for the past and present follies of their elders.

The contacts and friendships established between British and German young people, which the Scheme facilitates within the schools they jointly attend, are of profound importance. These relationships stand in condemnation of politicians and demagogues determined to divide rather than unite. The Dresden Scholars’ Scheme, on the contrary, asserts: Europa wir sind eins.

The Scheme is designed to enable pupils from schools in Dresden and elsewhere in Saxony to attend British independent schools at greatly reduced fees (scholarships are awarded by the schools, not by the Trust). It is estimated that about 300 pupils from Saxony have attended schools in England, Wales and Scotland under the Scheme. Most of them come for a whole year (and some have even stayed for two years); a few come for one or two terms.

In most cases the schools reduce their fees by 50 per cent to enable the German pupils – who are generally very popular recruits in British schools – to come to the UK. At present 12 independent senior schools are offering more than 30 places; all have boarding as well as day pupils and so the Dresden Scholars are fully residential. Applicants are asked to write (preferably in English) explaining why they would like to be considered for a Dresden Scholars’ place at the school and to send a recent report from their school in Saxony and a letter from their parents agreeing to pay the remainder of the school fee.

The opportunities provided by the Scheme are greatly appreciated by the pupils from Saxony and the British schools and their pupils also benefit from their presence.

For further information about the operation of the Dresden Scholars’ Scheme, please read the details below, look at the list of participating schools and download an application form. If any more guidance is required, please contact Paul Stocker by e-mail at paulstocker@gmx.co.uk

 How to Apply

Dresden Scholars’ Scheme – participating schools:

Schools in the UK offering places to boys and girls who attend schools in Saxony.

Please note that there are 3 terms in a school year. The boarding fee for senior pupils (those aged 11-18 or 13-18) varies from school to school but is normally in the range £6,800 to £11,000 per term. Please check current fees on each school’s website; these will often be found under ‘Admissions’.
